Water heater (geyser) size guide: 3, 6, 10, 15 or 25 litres?

Short answer

Use an instant water heater (1–3 litres) for a kitchen tap, a 6–10 litre storage heater for a bathroom used by one or two people, 15 litres for a family of three or four, and 25 litres or more for larger families, rain showers or bathtubs. In cold regions like Uttarakhand, choose the next size up because the incoming water is colder.

Wiring a water heater safely

  • Give it a dedicated circuit with its own MCB and a 16 A socket or a direct connection.
  • Size the wire for the heater's current: current (A) = power (W) ÷ 230 V. A 2 kW heater draws about 8.7 A; a 3 kW heater about 13 A.
  • Protect bathroom circuits with an RCCB (30 mA) — water and electricity are the highest-risk combination in a home.
  • Make sure the heater is properly earthed and has a working pressure-release valve.

Questions people also ask

Is a 15 litre geyser enough for a family of four?
+
Usually yes for bucket baths. For showers in winter, or in cold regions, consider 25 litres.
Which wire should I use for a geyser?
+
Size it for the current: a 2 kW heater draws about 8.7 A and a 3 kW heater about 13 A. 2.5 sq mm copper is common for typical geysers, and 4 sq mm for larger loads or long runs. Follow the datasheet and a licensed electrician's advice.
