Warm white vs neutral white vs cool white: which LED colour for which room?
Short answer
Use warm white (2700–3000K) for bedrooms, living and dining rooms; neutral white (around 4000K) for kitchens, bathrooms, study rooms, offices and shops; and cool white or daylight (5700–6500K) for utility areas, warehouses and outdoor security lighting. Keep one colour temperature within a room so it looks consistent.
What the K number means
Colour temperature is measured in kelvin (K). Lower numbers look yellow and cosy, like a filament bulb or sunset; higher numbers look white-blue and crisp, like midday daylight. It describes the colour of the light, not how bright it is.
Why many Indian homes use 6500K — and when not to
Cool daylight became the default because it matches the look of old fluorescent tube lights and feels bright. It works well for utility spaces and kitchens that need a crisp look, but in bedrooms and living rooms in the evening, warm or neutral light is more relaxing and makes skin tones and wood finishes look better.
Tips
- Keep one colour temperature per room. Mixing 3000K and 6500K in the same ceiling looks patchy.
- Look at the colour rendering index (CRI): 80+ for general use, 90+ where colours matter (dressing areas, showrooms, art).
- Neutral 4000K is the safest single choice if you're unsure.
- Try it: the colour switch at the top of the Samaksh home page and the Light Planner show the difference.
Questions people also ask
- Is 6500K good for the bedroom? +
- It's very bright and bluish. Most people find warm (2700–3000K) or neutral (4000K) light more relaxing for bedrooms.
- Which colour is best for a kitchen? +
- Neutral white around 4000K — it shows food colours accurately and keeps the worktop clear without feeling harsh.
- Does colour temperature affect brightness? +
- No. Brightness is measured in lumens. A warm and a cool light with the same lumens give the same amount of light, though cool light can feel brighter.
