What's the difference between 12 V, 24 V and 230 V LED strips?
12 V and 24 V strips are low-voltage: they need a driver (power supply) and are safer to handle and better for detailed indoor work. 24 V strips can run longer before the far end dims. 230 V rope and strip lights plug straight into mains through a connector and suit long decorative runs on facades and festive lighting.

Where can I cut an LED strip?
Only at the marked cut points — usually a printed line with copper pads, every few LEDs on low-voltage strips and at set intervals on 230 V rope lights. Cutting anywhere else leaves a section dead. Seal the cut end with the proper end cap on waterproof strips.

What size driver do I need for an LED strip?
Add up the load — watts per metre × length — and choose a driver about 20–25% bigger. A 5 m strip at 12 W/m is 60 W, so use a driver of about 75 W at the strip's voltage (12 V or 24 V).

Why is the far end of my LED strip dimmer?
That's voltage drop along the thin copper of the strip. Keep single runs within the maker's maximum length (often about 5 m for 12 V strips), feed long runs from both ends or from the middle, use 24 V instead of 12 V, and use thicker supply wire to the strip.

Do LED strips need an aluminium profile?
For anything more than a low-power decorative strip, yes. An aluminium profile spreads the heat (so the LEDs last longer), keeps the strip straight, and with a diffuser cover hides the individual dots for a smooth line of light.

What is a profile light?
A profile light is an LED strip built into an aluminium channel with a diffuser — a clean line of light that can be recessed into a ceiling or wall, mounted on a surface, set into a corner or hung as a linear pendant.

Which IP rating do I need for an LED strip?
IP20 (bare) strips are for dry indoor spaces only. Silicone-coated IP65 strips handle splashes in kitchens and bathrooms; IP67/IP68 sleeved strips are for outdoors and places that get wet. Drivers and connections need protection too.

How do I light a false-ceiling cove?
Lay the strip on the cove shelf facing up or towards the wall, so you see a soft glow rather than the dots. Warm or neutral white looks best; choose a strip with enough lumens per metre and keep the driver accessible for later service.

What do 2835 and 5050 mean on LED strips?
They're LED package sizes in tenths of a millimetre: 2835 is 2.8 × 3.5 mm and 5050 is 5.0 × 5.0 mm. 2835 LEDs are common for efficient white strips; 5050 packages are often used for RGB (colour) strips. Compare strips by lumens per metre, not by chip name.

What is an RGB LED strip?
An RGB strip has red, green and blue LEDs that mix to make colours, run from an RGB controller (often with a remote or app). RGBW strips add a white LED for proper white light. Use them for mood and decorative lighting rather than as the main light.

What is LED neon flex?

How do I install a 230 V rope light safely?
Use the maker's power connector and end cap, cut only at the marked points, keep connections out of water or use the outdoor-rated kit, and don't power it while still coiled on the reel. Protect the circuit with an MCB and, outdoors, a 30 mA RCCB.

Can LED strips be dimmed?
Yes, with a dimmable driver or an LED dimmer/controller made for strips (usually PWM dimming on the low-voltage side). Ordinary wall dimmers and fan regulators won't work with a standard strip driver.

How do I connect an LED strip to a wall switch?
Put the switch on the 230 V supply to the driver, not between the driver and the strip. The driver's output connects to the strip with the right polarity (+ and −). Keep the driver somewhere ventilated and reachable.

Can I join several LED strips end to end?
Only up to the maximum run length the maker allows from one feed point. Beyond that, run separate supply wires from the driver to each section (parallel feeding) instead of chaining more strips on, or the far end will be dim and the first section will overheat.

What are hanging (pendant) profile lights?
Linear pendants and ring lights are profile lights hung from the ceiling on adjustable steel wires, with the driver in the ceiling canopy or the false ceiling. They're used over dining tables, reception desks, offices and double-height halls.

What is under-cabinet lighting?
Strips, profiles or slim battens fixed under kitchen wall cabinets to light the worktop directly, so you're not working in your own shadow from the ceiling light. Neutral white around 4000K works best for cooking.

What is a wall washer light?

How many lumens per metre should an LED strip have?
For decorative glow and coves, a few hundred lumens per metre is plenty; for task lighting under cabinets or as main light in a profile, look for roughly 800–1,500 lm/m or more. Higher output means more heat, so use an aluminium profile.

Why did part of my LED strip stop working?
Usually a failed LED or a cracked joint breaks one section between two cut points, or a connector has come loose. On low-voltage strips the dead section can be cut out at the cut marks and rejoined with a connector or by soldering.

What is a batten light?
A batten is a slim, long LED fitting that replaces the old tube light — fixed straight onto a wall or ceiling, with the driver built in. It gives wide, even light for rooms, kitchens, corridors, garages and shops.

Do rope lights use a lot of electricity?
LED rope lights use far less than the old filament ones; total power is the watts-per-metre figure times the length. A 10 m run at a few watts per metre on for six hours an evening uses well under one unit a night.
