Planning a home's wiring

Points per room, circuits, loads, construction stages and testing.

  1. How do I plan the electrical layout of a new house?

Start from furniture: mark where beds, sofas, TV, desk, kitchen appliances, AC and geyser will go, then place light points, switchboards by the doors, sockets where things plug in, and separate circuits for heavy loads. Put the DB near the entrance and plan conduit routes before the slab and plaster.

  2. How many circuits does a house need?

Separate lighting circuits (at least one per floor), socket circuits by area, a dedicated circuit for each AC, geyser, kitchen appliance group, water pump and outdoor lighting. Splitting circuits means a fault trips only part of the house and wires stay correctly sized.

  3. What electrical points does a bedroom need?

Typically: a main light and fan point with switches by the door (and a two-way switch by the bed), bedside sockets with a USB point, a socket at the desk or dressing table, a 16 A point for the AC, a TV point if needed, and a night lamp.

  4. What electrical points does a kitchen need?

Several 16 A sockets above the worktop for mixer, microwave, induction, kettle and water purifier; dedicated points for the fridge, chimney and any oven or dishwasher; general and under-cabinet lighting; and an exhaust fan or chimney point. Keep sockets clear of the sink and stove.

    Modular Switches Kitchen Ventilation

  5. What electrical points does a bathroom need?

A splash-proof light (IP44 or more), an exhaust fan, a geyser point with its switch outside the door, a mirror light, and a shaver or hair-dryer socket placed well away from the shower — all on an RCCB-protected circuit.

  6. What electrical points does a living room need?

Layered lighting (ceiling, accent, reading), one or two fans, a TV wall with several sockets, data and TV cable points, sockets near sofas for charging and lamps, a 16 A AC point, and two-way switching if there are two entrances.

  7. How do I calculate the total load of a house?

Add up the wattage of all lights, fans, sockets (an allowance per socket) and fixed appliances, then apply a diversity factor because not everything runs at once. Your electrician uses this to size the main cable, main MCB, sanctioned load and the meter.

  8. Should I get a single-phase or three-phase connection?

Most homes are fine on single phase. Larger homes with several ACs, big pumps, lifts or a high total load often benefit from three phase, which spreads load and supports bigger motors. Your supplier's rules decide the load at which three phase is required.

  9. When should electrical work be done during construction?

Conduits and fan boxes go into slabs before casting; wall conduits and boxes go in after brickwork and before plastering; wiring is pulled after plastering; and switches, plates and fittings go in after painting. Missing the slab stage means surface wiring or cutting later.

  10. Where should light points be placed in a room?

Place general lights to spread evenly (not just one centre point), put task lights where you work (kitchen counters, desks, mirrors), and keep fittings away from fan blades so they don't flicker through the blades. Plan for false-ceiling lights before the ceiling is built.

  11. Should every room have its own MCB?

Not necessarily per room, but heavy loads should each have their own circuit, and lights and sockets should be split so one fault doesn't plunge a whole floor into darkness. A good layout groups by floor and by type of load.

  12. How do I plan wiring for an AC?

Give each AC its own circuit from the DB with a suitable MCB (often 16–20 A C-curve for 1–1.5 ton), wire sized for the load and run length (often 2.5–4 sq mm), a 16 A socket or a DP switch near the indoor unit, an earth, and an isolator or socket near the outdoor unit for servicing.

  13. What should I check before plastering the walls?

That every conduit is laid, joined and clear (blow or pull a draw wire through), boxes are at the right height and depth, nothing is missing from the plan, and photos or a marked drawing record where pipes run — so nobody drills into them later.

  14. Should I keep a drawing of my house wiring?

Yes. A simple marked plan of conduit routes, boxes, circuits and the DB schedule makes repairs, drilling and future additions far easier and safer. Take photos of walls before plastering.

  15. How do I plan wiring for an inverter?

Decide which circuits must run during cuts — usually some lights, fans, the router and a TV point — and wire them as separate 'inverter circuits' from the DB, through a changeover, so the inverter isn't overloaded by ACs and geysers.

  16. What does wiring a 2BHK flat typically involve?

Roughly: a DB with 8–12 ways, an RCCB, separate lighting and socket circuits, two or three AC circuits, a geyser circuit for each bathroom, a kitchen power circuit, an inverter circuit, and 60–100 points in all. The exact count depends on the layout and how you live.

  17. How much wire does a house need?

It depends on the layout, the number of points and the conduit routes, so electricians estimate from the drawing. As a starting point, count the points and circuit lengths, then add a margin for drops and wastage — and buy every size you need from the same series.

  18. Should I plan for an EV charger at home?

If you might buy an electric car or scooter, yes: run a conduit and, ideally, a dedicated circuit to the parking spot now, and check your sanctioned load. Adding it later is costlier.

  19. What's a good switchboard layout?

Put switchboards on the latch side of doors at a consistent height, group switches logically (lights, fan, regulator, socket), use two-way switches for rooms with two doors or beds, and keep heavy-load switches clearly labelled or with indicators.

  20. How do I plan lighting for a shop?

Bright, even general light (about 300–750 lux) from panels or linear lights, spotlights on displays and the cash counter, high-CRI light where colour sells, a glowing sign outside, and separate switching so night and day lighting can differ.

  21. What's needed for a home office or study?

Good desk-level light (about 300–500 lux, neutral white), sockets and USB points at desk height, a data point for the router or PC, a surge-protected strip for electronics, and an inverter-backed circuit for the router.

LED Panels Modular Switches Power Strips

  22. How do I plan outdoor and terrace electricals?

Weatherproof sockets, outdoor-rated lights (IP65+), a separate outdoor circuit with a 30 mA RCCB, conduit or armoured cable for runs, and a timer or photocell for gate and boundary lights. Add points for a water pump, CCTV and any solar equipment.

  23. How high should the distribution board be mounted?

With its top at a height you can reach without a ladder — commonly about 1.5–1.8 m — in a dry, accessible spot, not behind doors or cupboards, with clear space in front.

    MCB Boxes

  24. Is it worth wiring for smart home devices?

Leave a neutral wire in every switchbox (many smart switches need one), use deeper boxes, run data cables to the TV wall and router location, and plan good Wi-Fi coverage. It costs little during construction and keeps options open.

  25. What should a renovation rewiring include?

Replace old wire with correctly sized copper in conduit, add an earth to every point, fit a new DB with MCBs and a 30 mA RCCB, separate heavy-load circuits, add sockets where extension boards were used, and switch to LED fittings.

  26. How do I choose an electrician?

Look for a licensed electrician with references, who explains the plan, sizes wires and MCBs to the loads, installs earthing and RCCB protection, tests the work, and gives you a drawing of what was done.

  27. What should be tested when new wiring is finished?

Insulation resistance of each circuit, continuity of the earth to every point, polarity (switches on phase), earth resistance, and that the RCCB trips with its test button. Ask your electrician to note the results.

  28. What lights should a staircase have?

Light every step evenly — wall lights or step lights at low level, or a ceiling light at each landing — with two-way switching at the top and bottom, or a motion sensor. Avoid lights that glare into the eyes of someone coming down.
