MCBs, RCCBs & the MCB box

MCB, RCCB और DB

Ratings, curves, tripping, RCCBs, changeovers and board sizes.

  1. What does an MCB protect against?

An MCB (miniature circuit breaker) switches a circuit off automatically on overload — too much current for too long, which would overheat the wire — and on short circuit, which it trips almost instantly. It protects the wiring and the building, not people from shock; that's the RCCB's job.

  2. What do B, C and D curves on an MCB mean?

They set how much surge an MCB tolerates before tripping instantly: B-curve at about 3–5 times its rating (lighting, heaters, long cable runs), C-curve at 5–10 times (general use, motors, ACs, pumps), D-curve at 10–20 times (transformers, welding sets and other big inrush loads).

  3. Which MCB rating should I use for lights, sockets, AC and geyser?

Typical choices in homes: 6–10 A for lighting and fan circuits, 16 A for 16 A socket circuits, 16–20 A C-curve for a 1–1.5 ton AC, and 16–20 A for a 2–3 kW geyser — each on wire that can carry at least that much. The MCB must never be bigger than what its wire can safely carry.

  4. What do SP, DP, TP and TPN mean on MCBs?

They're the number of poles the breaker switches: SP (single pole) breaks the phase, DP (double pole) breaks phase and neutral together, TP (triple pole) the three phases of a three-phase supply, and TPN the three phases plus neutral. Main switches for single-phase homes are usually DP.

  5. What does 6 kA or 10 kA mean on an MCB?

That's its breaking capacity: the largest short-circuit current it can safely interrupt. 6 kA is common for homes; 10 kA is used where the supply can deliver bigger fault currents, such as near transformers or in commercial and industrial buildings.

  6. What is an RCCB, and do I need one?

An RCCB (residual current circuit breaker) compares the current going out on the phase with what comes back on the neutral; if some leaks to earth — through a faulty appliance or a person — it trips. A 30 mA RCCB is the key protection against electric shock, and every home should have one.

  7. Should I choose a 30 mA, 100 mA or 300 mA RCCB?

30 mA is for protecting people from shock — use it for homes, bathrooms, kitchens, outdoor and socket circuits. 100 mA and 300 mA RCCBs are used mainly for fire protection on whole installations or large feeders, often upstream of 30 mA devices.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  8. Can I use an RCCB instead of MCBs?

No. An RCCB doesn't trip on overload or short circuit, so it must always be backed by MCBs (or a fuse) of a suitable rating. Use the RCCB to protect people and the MCBs to protect the wiring — or an RCBO, which does both.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  9. What is an RCBO?

An RCBO combines an MCB and an RCCB in one device: it trips on overload, short circuit and earth leakage. Fitting one per circuit means a leakage fault in one circuit trips only that circuit, not the whole house.

  10. What is an isolator?

An isolator is a manual switch for safely disconnecting a supply — for example at the main board or next to an AC outdoor unit for servicing. It gives no automatic protection, so it's always used together with MCBs or fuses.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  11. What is a changeover switch?

A changeover switch selects between two supplies — mains and a generator or inverter — so they can never be connected together. That protects the generator and the people working on the lines. Automatic changeovers switch over by themselves when the mains fails and returns.

  12. What size MCB box (distribution board) do I need?

Count your circuits — lighting, sockets, kitchen, AC, geyser, outdoor — add the main switch and RCCB (which take modules too), then add 20–30% spare ways for the future. A small flat often needs an 8-way board; larger homes 12-way or more.

    MCB Boxes

  13. What does 'way' mean on an MCB box?

A 'way' is one outgoing circuit slot — the space for a single-pole MCB. A '6-way SPN' board holds six single-pole MCBs on a single-phase supply with a neutral link; TPN boards are for three-phase supplies.

    MCB Boxes

  14. Why does my MCB keep tripping?

Either the circuit is overloaded (too many appliances), there's a short circuit (damaged wire or appliance), a connection is loose and heating the breaker, or the MCB is the wrong rating or worn. Unplug everything on that circuit, reset, and add loads back one by one to find the culprit.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  15. Why does my RCCB keep tripping?

Something is leaking current to earth: a faulty geyser element, damp wiring or boxes, a wet outdoor light, or wiring where a neutral is shared between circuits or touches earth. Switch off all MCBs, reset the RCCB, then switch MCBs on one by one; the circuit that trips it is the one to check.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  16. What is the test button on an RCCB for?

Pressing it creates a small deliberate leakage to check that the RCCB still trips. Press it about once a month: it should trip at once. If it doesn't, have the RCCB replaced.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  17. Is it safe to keep resetting a tripping breaker?

No. A breaker trips for a reason. Resetting it again and again on a fault can damage wiring or start a fire. Find the cause — or call an electrician if you can't.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  18. Are MCBs better than rewirable (kit-kat) fuses?

Yes. MCBs trip at a precise current, reset with a switch, can't be 'repaired' with the wrong wire, and double as an on-off switch for the circuit. Rewirable fuses often end up with thicker wire than they should have, which removes the protection.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  19. Do MCBs wear out?

They can, especially after clearing big short circuits or after many years in a hot board. Replace an MCB that won't reset, trips at loads it used to carry, feels hot, or shows burn marks.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  20. What's the difference between overload and short circuit?

Overload is a bit too much current for a while — like running a heater, iron and kettle on one socket circuit — and it heats the wire slowly. A short circuit is phase touching neutral or earth directly, so a huge current flows instantly. MCBs handle both: slowly for overload, instantly for shorts.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  21. What's the difference between an ELCB and an RCCB?

'ELCB' originally meant an older voltage-operated earth leakage breaker. Today the devices sold as ELCBs are almost always current-operated RCCBs, which is the type to use.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  22. What current rating should my RCCB be?

Its current rating (such as 25, 40 or 63 A) must be at least as large as the main MCB or fuse ahead of it, so the RCCB isn't overloaded. Its sensitivity (30 mA for shock protection) is a separate number.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  23. What are Type AC and Type A RCCBs?

Type AC detects ordinary AC leakage. Type A also detects pulsating DC leakage, which appliances with electronics — washing machines, inverter ACs, induction cooktops, EV chargers — can produce. Type A is a better choice for circuits feeding such appliances.

  24. Where should the distribution board be installed?

In a dry, easily reached spot near where the supply enters — usually by the main door — at a height you can reach without a ladder, never inside a bathroom, and with space in front to work. Label every circuit.

    MCB Boxes

  25. Why should circuits in the MCB box be labelled?

So anyone can switch off the right circuit fast — in an emergency, for a repair or when an RCCB trips. Label each MCB with the room and load (for example 'Kitchen sockets', 'Bedroom AC').

    MCB Boxes

  26. What is a surge protection device (SPD)?

An SPD in the distribution board diverts high-voltage spikes from lightning or switching to earth before they reach your appliances. It's worthwhile in areas with frequent lightning or unstable supply, and needs a good earth to work.

  27. What size main MCB does a house need?

It follows your sanctioned load and meter: many homes use a 32 A or 40 A double-pole main, larger homes 63 A, and three-phase connections a four-pole or TPN main. The incoming cable must be sized for the main's rating.

  28. What's the difference between an MCB and an MCCB?

MCBs cover circuits up to about 63–125 A in homes and shops. MCCBs (moulded case circuit breakers) handle much larger currents — hundreds of amps — and often have adjustable trip settings, for commercial and industrial main boards.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  29. Is it normal for an MCB box to feel warm?

Slightly warm under heavy load, yes. A breaker or terminal that's hot to touch, discoloured or smells means a loose connection or an overloaded circuit — get it checked and tightened before it burns.

  30. How do I balance loads on a three-phase supply?

Spread the circuits so each of the three phases carries roughly the same load — for example ACs, geysers and kitchen loads split across phases rather than all on one. Unbalanced phases overload one line and can cause voltage problems.
