Earthing & shock safety

Earth pits, shocks, fires, floods and keeping children safe.

  1. What is earthing, and why does a house need it?

Earthing connects the metal parts of appliances and the wiring system to the ground through an earth electrode. If a live wire touches a metal body, the fault current flows safely to earth and the MCB or RCCB trips, instead of the current flowing through a person who touches it.

  2. What are the types of earthing for a house?

Common types are pipe earthing (a GI pipe in a pit with charcoal and salt or other backfill), plate earthing (a copper or GI plate buried deep), and chemical or 'maintenance-free' earthing (an electrode surrounded by a conductive compound that keeps moisture). The right one depends on the soil and how much maintenance you want.

    IS 3043

  3. What earth resistance should I aim for?

Lower is better. For homes and small buildings, electricians commonly aim for a few ohms — often under 5 Ω — measured with an earth tester. Rocky or dry soil may need more electrodes, deeper pits or chemical earthing to get there.

    IS 3043

  4. How can I tell if my house earthing is working?

An electrician measures earth resistance with an earth tester. A simple warning sign: measure the voltage between neutral and earth at a socket — it should be only a few volts at most. A high neutral-to-earth voltage points to poor earthing or a loose neutral.

  5. How many earth pits does a house need?

Common practice is at least two separate earth electrodes for a house, so the system stays earthed if one connection fails, with more for larger buildings, lifts or sensitive equipment. A lightning protection system needs its own earth.

  6. How do I maintain an earth pit?

Keep the pit accessible with a cover, check that the connection to the electrode is tight and not corroded, and for traditional pipe or plate pits pour water into the pit during dry months so the soil stays conductive. Have the resistance tested every year or two.

  7. Can I use the neutral wire as an earth?

Never. The neutral carries current in normal use, and if it breaks anywhere, the 'earthed' metal body can become live. Every 3-pin socket and metal fitting needs a proper earth wire back to the earth bar.

  8. Can a metal water pipe be used as an earth?

No. Pipes may have plastic sections, joints or be replaced later, so they're not a reliable earth electrode. Metal pipes should, however, be bonded to the main earth so they can't become live.

  9. What size should the earth wire be?

The protective earth wire inside the house is usually the same size as the circuit's phase wire for sizes up to 16 sq mm, insulated in green or green-yellow. The main lead to the earth electrode is sized for the whole installation by the electrician.

    House Wire

  10. Why do I get a tingle from my washing machine or fridge?

A tingle means current is leaking to the metal body and isn't going safely to earth — the appliance has a fault, the socket isn't earthed, or the house earthing is poor. Stop using it, have the socket's earth and the appliance checked, and fit a 30 mA RCCB.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  11. I get a shock from the geyser water. What should I do?

Switch the geyser off at its switch and MCB immediately and don't use it until checked. The heating element or wiring is probably leaking current into the water and the earthing isn't clearing it. Get the element, the earth connection and the RCCB checked by an electrician.

  12. What should I do if someone gets an electric shock?

Don't touch them while they're in contact with the current. Switch off at the switch, plug or MCB, or push the source away with a dry wooden or plastic object. Then call for medical help and start CPR if they aren't breathing and you know how.

  13. How do I put out an electrical fire?

Never use water on an electrical fire. Switch off the supply at the main switch if you can do it safely, and use a CO2 or dry powder (ABC) extinguisher. If the fire is growing, leave and call the fire brigade (101).

  14. What should I do if water enters my house during heavy rain?

Switch off the main supply before the water reaches sockets and boards, and don't touch switches with wet hands or while standing in water. After the water goes, have the wiring, boxes and appliances dried out and checked before switching back on.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  15. Why do I feel current when I touch a steel railing or metal tap?

Something is leaking current into the metalwork — a damaged wire, a faulty appliance or a poor earth — and the metal isn't bonded to earth. Treat it as dangerous: switch off circuits nearby, keep people away and get an electrician to find the fault.

  16. Is a neon tester screwdriver enough to check if a wire is dead?

No. A neon tester shows phase when it glows, but it can fail to glow on a live wire (dry hands, bad contact, failed bulb). Before working on wiring, switch off the MCB and confirm with a proper voltage tester or multimeter.

  17. How can I make my home's wiring safer for children?

Use sockets with safety shutters, keep cords out of reach, put a 30 mA RCCB on all circuits, don't leave extension boards on the floor where they can be played with, and keep the DB closed.

  18. What makes a bathroom electrically safe?

A 30 mA RCCB on the bathroom circuits, switches outside the door, no ordinary sockets near the shower or basin, splash-proof fittings (IP44 or more) near water, a properly earthed geyser, and all metal pipes bonded to earth.

  19. Do I need lightning protection for my house?

Tall buildings, buildings on hilltops and open sites, and places with frequent thunderstorms benefit from a lightning protection system — air terminals on the roof, down conductors and a dedicated earth — plus surge protection in the DB. It's designed to the IS/IEC 62305 series.

    IS/IEC 62305

  20. How do I know if my old house wiring needs replacing?

Warning signs: wiring older than 20–25 years, black rubber or cloth-covered (VIR) cables, aluminium wiring, no earth wire, rewirable fuses, frequent tripping, warm switches or sockets, and burnt smells. Get an electrician to test it — and rewire before adding ACs and geysers.

    House Wire Conduit & Casing

  21. How often should home wiring be inspected?

Have it checked every few years, and always after a flood, a fire, major renovation, buying an older house, or adding big loads like ACs. Shops, offices and rented properties benefit from more frequent checks.

  22. What is a plug-in socket tester?

A small plug with three indicator lights that shows whether a socket is wired correctly — phase, neutral and earth in the right places, and the earth connected. It's a quick check, not a substitute for proper testing.

  23. What is equipotential bonding?

Connecting metal pipes, structural steel and other exposed metal in a building to the main earth, so they all sit at the same voltage. If a fault occurs, there's no dangerous voltage between two metal things a person could touch at once.

  24. Is it dangerous to live near overhead power lines?

Keep well clear: never build, fix antennas, fly kites or use metal ladders and rods near overhead lines. If a line is too close to your building or a branch is touching it, contact the electricity supplier — don't try to deal with it yourself.

  25. What safety gear should an electrician use?

Insulated tools, a proper voltage tester, rubber-soled shoes, an insulating mat in front of panels, and gloves rated for the voltage. Most important: switch off, lock or tag the MCB, and test before touching.

  26. Why should every 3-pin plug use its earth pin?

The earth pin connects the appliance's metal body to the house earth. Breaking it off or using a 2-pin adapter removes that protection: a fault would make the body live instead of tripping the breaker.

    Plugs & Holders

  27. Are inverters and generators safe to connect to house wiring?

Only through a proper changeover switch, so the backup supply can never feed back into the street lines (which can kill a line worker) or meet the mains. The inverter or generator also needs proper earthing.

    MCBs & Changeovers

  28. Why do switchboards in old houses give shocks when touched?

Broken plates, exposed screws or terminals, and missing earth on metal boxes can leave live parts within reach. Replace damaged plates and switches, earth metal boxes and add a 30 mA RCCB.
