Which room heater is best for a bedroom?
Oil-filled radiators give steady, quiet, gentle heat for closed bedrooms; fan (blower) heaters warm a room fast; halogen, quartz and carbon heaters heat whoever is in front of them instantly. For overnight use, choose a heater with a thermostat and tip-over and overheat cut-offs.

What wattage room heater do I need?
As a rough guide, about 1 kW warms a small room of 100–120 sq ft and 2 kW a larger room, depending on insulation and how cold it is outside. Use a 16 A socket and wiring sized for a 2 kW heater (about 8.7 A).

How do I use a room heater safely?
Keep at least a metre clear around it, never dry clothes on it or cover it, keep it away from curtains and bedding, plug it directly into a 16 A socket (not an extension board), and switch it off when you leave the room or go to sleep unless it has proper cut-offs.

Why does my heater make the room feel dry?
Heating air lowers its relative humidity, which can dry skin and throats. Oil-filled radiators feel gentlest; a bowl of water nearby or a humidifier helps. Fan heaters can feel drier because they move a lot of warm air.

What's the difference between a dry iron and a steam iron?

What cookware works on an induction cooktop?
Only pans with a magnetic base — cast iron, most stainless steel and induction-marked cookware. If a magnet sticks firmly to the bottom, it will work. Plain aluminium, copper and glass won't heat.

How do I read my electricity meter?
The main reading is cumulative energy in kWh (units). Subtract last month's reading from this month's to get units used. Electronic meters also show other screens (like maximum demand) as they cycle — the kWh screen is the one billed for homes.

How can I check if my electricity meter is running when nothing is on?

What's the difference between a monoblock pump and a submersible pump?
A monoblock pump sits on the surface and pulls water up through a suction pipe — for sumps and shallow sources. A submersible pump sits down in the borewell or tank and pushes water up — for deep borewells.

What protection does a water pump need?

Why do lights dim when a motor or AC starts?
Motors draw several times their running current for a moment when they start, pulling the voltage down briefly. Occasional dips are normal; big or frequent dips suggest a weak supply, a long or thin supply cable, or loose connections.

How do I clean a dry iron's soleplate?

What does the energy meter's 'imp/kWh' number mean?
It's how many times the pulse LED blinks per unit of energy — for example 3200 imp/kWh means 3,200 blinks per unit. Counting blinks over a minute lets you estimate how much power is being drawn at that moment.

Is it safe to leave a phone charger plugged in?
A good-quality charger draws very little when idle, but it's still a small fire risk if it's damaged or cheap. Unplug chargers that are warm, cracked or buzzing, and switch off the socket when not in use.
