Modular vs non-modular switches: which should you choose?
Short answer
Modular switches clip into a plate mounted on a concealed box, so you can mix switches, sockets, regulators and USB modules and replace any one later — they're the standard for new homes and offices. Non-modular (conventional or piano-type) switches mount on a switchboard sheet and cost less, which suits budget rewiring and utility areas.

How a modular system fits together
- A concealed box (PVC gang box or metal box) goes into the wall during wiring.
- A support frame fixes onto the box.
- Modules clip into the frame: switches are usually 1 module (1M) wide, sockets 2M, fan regulators 1–2M.
- A cover plate in the chosen finish snaps on top. Plates come in sizes from 1M to 18M.
6 A or 16 A socket?
6 A sockets are for lamps, chargers, TVs and small appliances. 16 A sockets (larger pins) are for heavier loads such as air conditioners, water heaters, room heaters and some kitchen appliances. Combined 6/16 A sockets accept both plugs.
Questions people also ask
- Are modular switches safer? +
- Both can be safe when properly rated and installed. Modular systems are easier to maintain and upgrade, and the enclosed box keeps wiring better protected.
- What is a gang box? +
- The box set into the wall behind a modular plate. Its size matches the plate's module count.
