COB vs SMD LED: what's the difference?

Short answer

A COB (chip-on-board) LED packs many LED chips into one small light-emitting surface, giving a single, focused beam with one clean shadow — ideal for downlights, spotlights and accent lighting. SMD (surface-mounted device) LEDs are individual packages spread across a board, giving wide, even light — ideal for bulbs, panels, battens and strip lights.

Neither is simply better. Choose COB where you want to aim light at something — art, a shelf, a feature wall — and SMD where you want a room evenly lit.

Questions people also ask

Are COB lights brighter than SMD?
+
Not by type alone. Brightness depends on the lumen output of the specific product. COB looks more intense because the light comes from a smaller area.
Which is better for a false ceiling?
+
Use SMD panels for general light and COB downlights for accents. Most good ceilings use both.
