Ceiling fan size guide: which sweep for which room?
Short answer
A 1200 mm (48-inch) ceiling fan suits most Indian bedrooms and living rooms of about 120–175 sq ft (roughly 10 × 12 to 12 × 14 ft). Use 900–1050 mm for rooms under about 100 sq ft, and 1400 mm — or two fans — for rooms above about 175–200 sq ft. Mount the blades about 2.4–2.7 m (8–9 ft) above the floor.
Mounting height
- Blades about 2.4–2.7 m (8–9 ft) above the floor give the best air at seated and sleeping height.
- Keep at least about 2.3 m (7.5 ft) from floor to blades for safety.
- Keep the blades at least about 0.3 m (1 ft) below the ceiling so the fan can draw air.
- Use a longer down-rod for high ceilings and a short one (or a hugger mount) for low ceilings.
What to compare on the box
- Air delivery (in m³/min, CMM): how much air the fan moves.
- Power (W): how much electricity it uses at full speed.
- Service value (CMM per watt): air delivery ÷ power — higher means more efficient.
- BEE star rating: star labelling has been mandatory for ceiling fans in India since January 2023. More stars mean better efficiency.
BLDC or induction motor?
BLDC (brushless DC) fans use an electronic motor and typically draw around 30–35 W at full speed, against roughly 70–80 W for a conventional induction fan, and usually come with remote control. Induction fans cost less up front and are simple to repair. For fans that run many hours a day, BLDC saves the most electricity.
